Cheltenham School District in Elkins Park, Montgomery County, PA, is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic.                               

 

REPORTS TO:       Director and Assistant Director of Facilities                                         

 

GRADE/TIER:       G13

 

Location:             Administration Building and District-Wide

 

JOB SUMMARY:      The Maintenance Mechanic position provides a variety of skilled work in the maintenance, alteration and repair of the District’s facilities. The position includes maintaining facilities in safe operating condition; performing a wide variety of skilled maintenance activities (e.g. carpentry, plumbing, electrical, ventilating systems, alarms, boilers, etc.); addressing immediate operational and/or safety concerns; assisting skilled trades as assigned; ensuring adequate materials are available to complete assignments in a timely manner.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs all requested service calls in the safest possible manner. Utilizes all available and necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Proactively requests additional safety equipment as needed to continue working in the safest possible manner. Observes all safety regulations and policies.
  2. Carries out daily works as assigned for building systems and preventative maintenance

    work. Closes work order in the on line system to review by the Assistant Director of

    Facilities in order to improve performance.

  3. Works with Assistant Director of Facilities to coordinate work activities around daily

    activities.

  4. Participate in building renovations that include, but are not limited to the education,

    residential, warehouse and other auxiliary service buildings.

  5. Duties include general maintenance and labor to perform repairs, demolition and

    installation that addresses school requests and needs. Including participation in project

    renovations, repairs and demolition of rooms. Hanging campus banners, deliver or pick up equipment or parts, hang picture frames, repair and install window shades and screens, install or hang holiday items, remove and install carpeting and cove base, patch concrete, hang classroom audio and visual projectors and prepare clean up before and after floods or other emergencies, are some examples of general maintenance duties.

  6. Walls and Floors - patches, repairs, install plaster, drywall, spackling, install floor tiling

    & other flooring.

  7. Locks and Keys - replacing locks, door hardware and keys.

  8. Life Safety Systems - perform basic troubleshooting of fire alarm systems. Performs

    monthly inspection of fire extinguishers. Can identify trouble with sprinkler systems. Can identify and resolve issues with emergency lighting systems.

  9. Painting - painting, spackling of wall coatings and coverings.

  10. HVAC - basic boiler, steam, and forced hot air HVAC. System operations including both

    hot water and steam heating, as well as, cooling system including window units, ductless systems and chillers.

  11. Install and repair window air conditioning and heat pump units.

  12. HVAC preferred experience with electric pneumatic valve controls.

  13. Plumbing - Basic plumbing. Able to troubleshoot and resolve clogs of sanitary systems.

    Can remove and replace basic fixtures like faucets, toilets and urinals.

  14. Carpentry - Basic carpentry. Knowledge and experience in rough framing finish carpentry, door, and window installation and trim.
  15. Electrical - change light bulbs, fluorescent tubes and ballast. Assist in the repair,

    maintenance, and installation of electrical equipment and fixtures. Experience with meters and meter controls.

  16. Elevators- evaluations and trouble shoots elevators systems at a basic level. Able to

    safely clean pits.

  17. Glass- replace/repair window glazing and associated trim. This includes performing

    emergency callback service.

  18. Clean job site- including broom sweeping construction areas and a more detailed cleaning in education and residential environments once work has been completed or the end of a workday. Leave the work site in a safe manner.

  19. Accompany and guide vendors to and around school as needed to perform scheduled or annual service or survey inspections for the school.

  20. Provides supporting service during schools special events and emergencies, including

    student residents. Also, must be available for extended periods on campus during

    emergencies.

  21. Maintains logs and submits equipment reports as requested or needed for tracking and

    maintaining service cycles.

  22. Perform other duties as assigned such as snow removal, and assist outside contractors.

    Overtime may be required due to the severity of the situation which will be determined

    by the Facilities and Maintenance Director.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or G.E.D
  • Five Years of field experience in repair and maintenance in educational, residential, or medical environments preferred.
  • Must possess sufficient knowledge and understanding of mechanical systems, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and facility disciplines.
  • Proficiency in completing work orders using online work order system (ie, School Dude).
  • Knowledge and understanding of local and national sanitation/building codes.
  • Ability to read complex blueprints and schematic diagrams.
  • Ability to work with others and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work in a service oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities.
  • Must be knowledgeable of safety regulations and procedures for working with asbestos.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to reach above and below the waist
  • Ability to use fingers to pick, feel and grasp objects
  • Some bending and twisting of the body required
  • Ability to lift and/or carry supplies weighing 75 lbs. or more
  • Ability to climb, crouch, stoop, kneel, and crawl
  • Ability to mostly sit with some walking, standing or moving throughout the district
  • Ability to stand or walk eighty percent (80%) of workday

SPECIFIC SKILLS:  Ability to operate various maintenance equipment and vehicles

 

LICENSE: Must maintain a valid driver's license.
